Record Field Set for 6th Intercontinental Chess Championship for Prisoners
Global Participation Marks Milestone in Prisoner Chess Initiative
The 6th Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners will take place from October 13–15, 2026, uniting incarcerated players from 56 countries in a three-day online competition hosted on Chess.com. Organized by FIDE and the Cook County (Chicago, IL, USA) Sheriff’s Office, this year’s event sets a new participation record with 140 teams registered, spanning men’s, women’s, and youth categories across multiple time zones.
Chess as a Tool for Rehabilitation and Growth
The championship underscores chess’s role as an educational and social tool in correctional facilities. Since its 2021 inception, the initiative has expanded across six continents, promoting critical thinking, emotional control, and teamwork to support societal reintegration. Organizers emphasize that the event fosters personal growth, with participants preparing through structured training programs.
Debuts and Expanding Participation
Nigeria will make its championship debut this year, with male players from Kirikiri Medium Custodial Center preparing through a seven-week intensive chess program organized by Anchor Heritage Initiative, concluding with a six-round tournament. In Malawi, five teams have registered across categories, supported by Airtel Malawi’s internet connectivity to enable international competition. Kenya, a participant since 2024, has integrated chess into all 134 prisons, citing its value in cultivating patience and strategic decision-making. India returns with strong representation, including the Yerawada Women’s Prison team, which qualified through the Asian stage after training in openings and endgames.
Digital Platform Enables Global Connectivity
The online format on Chess.com allows geographically dispersed correctional facilities to compete as if sharing the same board. The event has grown into one of the largest international sporting competitions for incarcerated individuals, aligning with FIDE’s Chess for Freedom programme. General information, technical requirements, and fair play measures are available in PDF format on the official website.
