Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu Claims 2026 Grand Chess Tour Title in Saint Louis

Indian Grand Master Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu won the 2026 Grand Chess Tour Finals at the Saint Louis Chess Club in Saint Louis, United States, from August 22–27, 2026. The four highest-ranked full-tour players after the regular season contested a knockout tournament for the GCT crown.

Tournament Format

Each match included two Classical games, two Rapid games, and four Blitz games. The total prize fund was $450,000. Praggnanandhaa entered the Finals as the top seed, with Wesley So as the second seed, Fabiano Caruana as the third seed, and Vincent Keymer as the fourth seed.

Semifinal Results

Praggnanandhaa defeated Vincent Keymer in convincing fashion, winning the point-heavy Classical and Rapid segments and securing his place in the final before the Blitz portion of the match.

The second semifinal between Fabiano Caruana and Wesley So proved to be a much closer contest. After the two Classical games ended in draws, Caruana gained the advantage by winning the bonus Blitz game. The Rapid encounters were split evenly, leaving the outcome to be decided in Blitz. After scoring victories in the first and third games and drawing the second, Caruana advanced to the final.

Final Match

Caruana started strongly, defeating Praggnanandhaa in the first Classical game with the white pieces. The Indian Grand Master came close to leveling the match in the return game but could not capitalize on his winning chances and had to settle for a draw.

Heading into the final day six points down (3–9), Praggnanandhaa mounted a remarkable comeback, winning both Rapid games to seize an 11–9 lead. Caruana evened the score after winning the second Blitz game, but Praggnanandhaa responded decisively in the following game, restoring a two-point advantage.

The Indian Grand Master achieved a completely winning position in the final Blitz game but chose to force a draw by perpetual check, securing the title with a final score of 15–13.

Third-Place Match

In the match for third place, Vincent Keymer obtained a two-point edge over Wesley So after winning the bonus Blitz game, with both Classical games ending in draws. The opponents traded victories in the Rapid segment, but the Blitz portion was completely dominated by So, who won all four games to secure third place.
