Magnus Carlsen Returns for Budapest Total World Championship Pilot

Budapest host’s Total World Championship pilot

Budapest and Geneva will stage a pivotal month of world-class chess starting 10 November 2026, featuring the Total World Championship pilot and setting the stage for the Salesforce FIDE World Championship match.

The Total World Championship pilot runs from 10 to 20 November in Budapest. The format combines fast classical, rapid, and blitz segments in a single tournament. Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, 35, is among the participants and has been preparing with a training camp in Spain ahead of the event.

Carlsen returns to competitive action after time away from the circuit, aiming to test his form in the multi-format competition before the classical championship unfolds.

Sindarov targets classical crown in Geneva

Following the Budapest pilot, the Salesforce FIDE World Championship match takes place in Geneva from 24 November to 12 December. Champion Gukesh Dommaraju faces challenger Javokhir Sindarov in a 14-game classical contest.

If the match remains level after the classical games, rapid and blitz tiebreaks will determine the winner. Sindarov will be looking to claim the classical title in what marks a significant milestone in his career.

London Classic also in action

Meanwhile, the traditional London Classic begins on 24 November at the Novotel West in Hammersmith and continues until 7 December, adding to a busy calendar for top players.
