The Global Chess League 2026 (GCL) returns to Bengaluru with a star-studded field featuring Magnus Carlsen, Viswanathan Anand, Jovakhir Sindarov, Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, Divya Deshmukh and Arjun Erigaisi, kicking off on Saturday with one of the most anticipated editions of the franchise-based chess tournament.

Speaking on the eve of the league, five-time World champion Magnus Carlsen noted that innovative formats such as the GCL and the Total Chess World Championship Tour were helping chess reach wider audiences. The reigning Norwegian star, representing Alpine Pipers, said he was eager to contribute after a season away, during which his team went on to lift the title without him.

Five-time World champion Viswanathan Anand, meanwhile, switches colours this year, lining up for PBG Alaskan Knights. The Indian legend indicated he was approaching the event as a player rather than a mentor, underlining the team’s positive atmosphere ahead of the opening round.

Jovakhir Sindarov, who is scheduled to challenge D. Gukesh for the World title later this year, made it known that the World Championship clash was firmly off his mind. Turkish prodigy Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus makes his first appearance at the GCL as part of Alaskan Knights, expressing excitement at sharing the squad with Anand and Erigaisi. India’s Divya Deshmukh, the reigning Women’s World Cup winner, also steps onto GCL boards for the first time, adding intrigue around how she handles the unique no-increment time control.

The Women’s World Cup winner acknowledged the appeal and the danger of time scrambles, noting that she would relish the chance to flag opponents if the situation arose.

GCL chairman Peeyush Dubey underlined the league’s vision of presenting chess as a festival rather than a conventional tournament. He pointed to the involvement of major global companies as a sign of the format’s growing commercial appeal, with Bengaluru once again serving as a fitting stage for the spectacle.
