Ganges and Pipers Dominate Penultimate Day in Bengaluru
The Global Chess League (GCL) 2026 entered its penultimate round of the preliminary stage on Friday in Bengaluru, with the Ganges Grandmasters and defending champions Alpine APL Pipers delivering commanding performances to all but secure their spots in the Season 4 title clash.
Match Results and Standings
Three matches were played on the penultimate day. The Ganges Grandmasters produced the biggest win of the tournament, crushing the CheQ Mumba Masters 16-1. The defending champions Alpine APL Pipers edged out the FYERS American Gambits 9-7, while the Triveni Continental Kings defeated the PBG Alaskan Knights 13-7.
The results left the Ganges Grandmasters and Alpine APL Pipers tied at the top with 18 match points each. However, the Grandmasters claimed the No. 1 spot in the overall standings owing to their superior game score. The FYERS American Gambits sit in third place with 15 match points and would need one of the top two leaders to slip up in the final round while also securing a convincing victory of their own.
Key Performances
- Magnus Carlsen ended Javokhir Sindarov’s three-game winning streak on the icon board, with the Norwegian grandmaster reportedly in total control throughout and forcing the Uzbek player to resign after 36 moves.
- Vidit Gujrathi defeated Daniil Dubov in a rook-knight endgame after a marathon 96-move battle that went into a time scramble, helping the Pipers complete a double over the Gambits.
- Zhu Jiner notched her first victory of the tournament, beating Kateryna Lagno in 44 moves on the Superstar women board for the Triveni Continental Kings.
- Alexandra Kosteniuk capitalised on an error from Nino Batsiashvili to score four points, while Pranav Venkatesh forced Abhimanyu Mishra’s resignation on the Prodigy board.
- Arjun Erigaisi secured a win over Wei Yi, and 15-year-old Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus defeated Aravindh Chithambaram, though neither result could alter the outcome for the Alaskan Knights.
What Lies Ahead
The final round of the preliminary stage takes place on Saturday, September 12, in Bengaluru. The schedule features three matches: Triveni Continental Kings versus Alpine APL Pipers at 5:00 PM, PBG Alaskan Knights versus Ganges Grandmasters at 6:30 PM, and FYERS American Gambits versus CheQ Mumba Masters at 8:00 PM. Both the Grandmasters and the Pipers need only a single victory in their respective final-round fixtures to advance to the Season 4 final.
