Ganges Grandmasters Edge Past FYERS American Gambits in GCL Season 4 Thriller

The Ganges Grandmasters halted the unbeaten run of table toppers FYERS American Gambits with a 9-7 victory on Day 2 of the Global Chess League (GCL) Season 4 at Bengaluru on Sunday. The result lifted the Grandmasters to second place in the standings after the Gambits had led the tournament following Day 1 of the league, a joint initiative of Tech Mahindra and FIDE.

The Grandmasters were playing their second match of the day, having earlier suffered an 11-6 defeat at the hands of the defending champions Alpine APL Pipers. That margin was identical to the one by which PBG Alaskan Knights overcame CheQ Mumba Masters for their first win of the event. In the day’s closing contest, the Mumba Masters registered their maiden victory, narrowly edging out Triveni Continental Kings, who remain the only team yet to register a matchpoint.

Icon Board Drama

The headline clash of the day on the Icon board featured a drawn encounter between Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi. Nepomniachtchi built a dominant position against the world number one but failed to convert an extra passed pawn after a series of inaccuracies. Carlsen offered his opponent two subsequent winning chances, both of which went begging, with the game eventually ending peacefully.

Pipers Hold Off the Grandmasters

The Pipers clinched their second straight win of the season thanks largely to their performances on the third and fifth Superstar boards. Vidit punished a queen blunder by Leinier Dominguez to collect four points, while Humpy Koneru took apart an unsound opening choice from Stavroula Tsolakidou and was named Player of the Match. Koneru later indicated that she had recognised her advantage early and played with sufficient accuracy to convert, even though she believed she could have done so more cleanly.

Shuvalova Seals the Gambits Upset

The Grandmasters responded on the fourth Superstar board, where Polina Shuvalova overcame Divya Deshmukh. The visitors pulled one back through Nihal Sarin, a favourite of Indian e-sports figure Naman “Mortal” Mathur, who was present in the spectator gallery. Yet it was Shuvalova who had the final word in the contest, defeating Bibisara Assaubayeva for her third straight win in as many rounds. She was adjudged Player of the Match.

Mixed Fortunes Elsewhere

In the same fixture, Nepomniachtchi turned the tables on 2026 Candidates winner Javokhir Sindarov in a complex endgame, while Gambits teammate Daniil Dubov squandered a sizeable advantage against Leinier Dominguez Perez in a marathon 101-move game. Arjun Erigaisi and Pranesh M traded errors in their encounter, with the latter blinking last.

The encounter between leaders Viswanathan Anand and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave finished as a calm draw. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov emerged victorious from a chaotic battle with Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, while Nino Batsiashvili was ruthless against Carissa Yip. Abhimanyu Mishra benefited from Bardiya Daneshvar‘s misjudgement of central pawn advances. The Triveni Continental Kings, last season’s runners-up, absorbed yet another narrow defeat despite winning two games with the black pieces, leaving them still without a matchpoint.
