FIDE World Team Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships 2026 Preview

The FIDE World Team Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships 2026 will feature six-player teams competing across two formats, with a total prize fund of 500,000 euros. This year’s event marks the fourth iteration of the championships, with Team MGD1 entering as the defending rapid champions and WR Chess (Team) as the defending blitz champions.

Format and Structure

The tournament will follow a two-stage format. Stage 1 consists of four pools with 12 teams each, followed by Stage 2 where the top 16 teams advance to a knockout format. The rapid section will be played at a time control of 15 minutes plus 10 seconds increment per move, while the blitz section uses 3 minutes plus 2 seconds increment.

Leading Rapid Contenders

WR Chess tops the rapid field with an impressive roster featuring Magnus Carlsen, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So, and Jan-Krzysztof Duda, supported by Aleksandra Goryachkina and Alexandria Kosteniuk. Hexamind Chess Team enters with Levon Aronian, Anish Giri, and Alireza Firouzja, alongside former rapid world champion Volodar Murzin and players including Vidit Santosh Gujrathi, Kateryna Lagno, and Divya Deshmukh. Kazchess rounds out the leading contenders with Richárd Rapport, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, and Alexander Grischuk.

Blitz Field

In the blitz section, Dragon Chilling replaces Kazchess among the top three teams. Former world champion Ding Liren leads Dragon Chilling alongside Yu Yangyi, Wei Yi, Lu Shanglei, Ju Wenjun, Bai Jinshi, and Lei Tingjie. WR Chess and Hexamind Chess Team remain strong contenders, joined by Kazchess, Mr Birdie and friends, Team MGD1, and Endgame.AI.

Players to Watch

Carlsen arrives in strong form after winning the 2026 ASEAN E-Sports Chess Cup and maintains his position as reigning rapid and blitz world champion. Vladislav Artemiev, who finished second in the 2025 World Rapid Championship without suffering a loss, offers solid board-one strength. Arjun Erigaisi has demonstrated consistent speed chess excellence, placing third at the 2025 World Rapid Championship and winning the Swiss portion of the 2025 World Blitz Championship. Alireza Firouzja, a noted speed chess specialist, enters following a mixed performance at the GCT: Super Rapid & Blitz Poland 2026, where his rapid results disappointed but blitz performance was acceptable.
