ChessFest Returns to Trafalgar Square with Free Chance to Challenge Grandmasters

ChessFest, the annual public celebration of chess, returns to Trafalgar Square in central London on Sunday, 12 July 2026, giving amateur players and children a free opportunity to take on some of England’s strongest grandmasters.

The event runs from noon to 7pm and welcomes complete beginners, who will receive guidance from tutors representing Chess in Schools and Communities.

A Full Day of Free Chess

ChessFest is designed to bring the game directly to the public in one of the most recognisable public spaces in the United Kingdom. The seven-hour programme includes simultaneous displays and one-to-one speed games hosted inside the Challenge the Chess Master tent.

Participants are invited to drop in at any point during the day, with no entry fee and no prior experience required.

Featured Grandmasters

  • Michael Adams — nine-time British champion and one of England’s most decorated players.
  • Gawain Maroroa Jones — three-time British champion and experienced international competitor.
  • Additional international players available for simultaneous displays and speed games throughout the day.

Format and Activities

The day combines two main formats: classical simultaneous displays, where a single grandmaster plays multiple boards at once, and shorter one-to-one speed games held inside the dedicated Challenge the Chess Master tent. The structure allows visitors to choose the type of encounter that suits their interest and skill level.

Tutors from Chess in Schools and Communities will be on hand to introduce newcomers to the basics, making the event accessible to families and players who have never taken part in formal chess before.

Why It Matters

ChessFest has established itself as a flagship outreach event for the British chess community, blending competitive exhibition with grassroots promotion. By staging the event in Trafalgar Square, organisers aim to reach audiences who might otherwise never attend a chess tournament, while giving established players a chance to interact directly with fans.
