BUDAPEST, HUNGARY — The world’s leading chess players will converge in Budapest from November 10 to 21, 2026, for the inaugural Total Chess World Championship Tour Pilot, marking a significant development in professional chess competition.

The event, conceptualized by Norway Chess and sanctioned by FIDE, introduces a revolutionary championship format that evaluates players across Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz disciplines. The Budapest Pilot serves as the first showcase of this ambitious initiative, bringing together elite grandmasters from Europe, Asia, and North America ahead of the official launch of the multi-city Total Chess World Championship Tour in 2027.

Elite Field Confirmed

The tournament features 18 confirmed participants, including multiple World Championship contenders and rising talents. The lineup includes Magnus Carlsen of Norway, the five-time World Champion and current world number one, alongside Fabiano Caruana of the United States, currently ranked second globally. The field represents a remarkable gathering of top-ranked players, with rankings spanning from world number one to number sixty-five.

European representation includes Vincent Keymer of Germany, Anish Giri of the Netherlands, Richard Rapport of Hungary, and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France. Asian powers are well-represented through India’s Arjun Erigaisi, Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan, and Praggnanandhaa R, who also holds the reigning Norway Chess champion title. North American participants Wesley So and Hans Moke Niemann from the United States round out the field.

Format and Structure

Competitors will battle across three distinct time controls: Blitz, Rapid, and Fast Classic. This comprehensive format rewards versatility and aims to identify the most complete chess player across all disciplines. The combined scoring system creates a unique competitive environment that differs from traditional single-format tournaments.

Results from the Budapest Pilot will inform the competitive framework for the broader Tour, which will feature four premier tournaments across different global cities beginning in 2027. The organizers have indicated that six additional player spots will be announced in September.
