Bengaluru Set for Global Chess League Season 4 as World’s Best Assemble

Bengaluru, India is hosting the fourth edition of the Global Chess League at the Lalit Ashok venue. The tournament, organized by Tech Mahindra in partnership with FIDE, brings together the world’s leading chess players for the mixed-gender team competition that opens this Saturday.

Star-Studded Lineup

The roster features twelve elite grandmasters, including World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand, women’s chess stars Divya Deshmukh and Koneru Humpy, and prominent players such as Anish Giri, Alireza Firouzja, Jovakhir Sindarov, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Ian Nepomniachtchi. The defending champion Alpine Pipers will be led by Carlsen, who returns after missing last season’s tournament in Mumbai.

Team Changes and New Additions

The Alpine Pipers franchise has undergone significant changes from last season. While Anish Giri remains the only player from the previous championship-winning squad, the team has strengthened its lineup by adding women’s World Cup champion Divya Deshmukh and experienced campaigner Koneru Humpy. Both players will be making their Global Chess League debut.

Unique Tournament Format

The Global Chess League distinguishes itself with several innovative rules. Matches award four points for a win with black pieces, teams must include both male and female players, and a coin toss determines colors before each encounter. Additionally, there is no time increment for the first 40 moves, creating a distinct competitive environment not seen in traditional chess events.
