FIDE Global Chess League Season 4 Set for Bengaluru with Carlsen’s Return and Deshmukh’s Debut

The FIDE Tech Mahindra Global Chess League (GCL) will hold its fourth season in Bengaluru, India, from 5th to 13th September at The Lalit Ashok luxury hotel, with the opening ceremony staged at Bangalore Palace. The franchise-based competition marks India’s second consecutive year as host following the Mumbai edition, reflecting the country’s expanding role in international chess.

Bengaluru: Where Chess Meets India’s Technology Capital

Often referred to as the Silicon Valley of India, Bengaluru offers a fitting backdrop for a league that has consistently emphasised the intersection of chess and technology. The city is home to major technology firms and a large community of students and tech professionals, aligning with GCL’s stated goal of using technological tools, including AR, VR, and Physical AI, to enhance spectator engagement.

Bangalore Palace, a 19th-century structure originally built for the Maharaja of Mysore, will serve as the ceremonial venue, while daily competition is set for The Lalit Ashok luxury hotel. Beyond the playing halls, the league’s year-round Road2GCL programme, launched in 2025, will continue to run online and in-person qualifying events designed to connect players, creators, and fans.

Headline Players and Team Moves

Magnus Carlsen, who skipped Season 3, returns as the Icon player of the Alpine APL Pipers, the defending champions. The Pipers’ roster also includes Anish Giri and Vidit Gujrathi on the Men’s Superstar boards, while Koneru Humpy joins the women’s ranks alongside Divya Deshmukh.

Deshmukh, the Women’s World Cup winner, will make her first GCL appearance after becoming the first Indian to win the Women’s World Cup at age 19. Her final-round victory over Humpy in Batumi also earned her the Grandmaster title.

Viswanathan Anand, who represented Ganges Grandmasters during the league’s first three seasons, has transferred to PBG Alaskan Knights. Other notable entrants include Volodar Murzin, Arjun Erigaisi, Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, Kateryna Lagno, Nino Batsiashvili, and Abhimanyu Mishra.

Growth and Outlook

Since its launch four years ago, the league has transitioned from a novel franchise experiment into an established sports property. According to GCL figures, media reach grew 65% between Seasons 1 and 3, while overall media value increased 2.4 times.

League chairperson Peeyush Dubey indicated that Season 4 aims to deliver a larger fan-facing setup than previous editions, alongside a more prominent technology layer. With refreshed team compositions and the combination of experienced champions and emerging talent, the Bengaluru edition is positioned as a step toward longer-term continuity for the format.
