Description

You can see one move ahead — but can you track five interacting pieces, anticipate a pin along a diagonal, and spot a skewer through a file, all without looking at a board? Level 2 takes your mental chessboard from basic to battle-ready.

If you have been playing chess for a while, you probably know the frustration: you calculate a promising-looking combination, play it confidently, and then watch in horror as your opponent replies with a move you completely missed. Not because the move was brilliant — but because you forgot where one of the pieces was standing. At the 1200–1600 level, the vast majority of lost games are not caused by inferior openings or poor strategy. They are caused by visualization errors — your mental image of the board was wrong, incomplete, or blurry when it mattered most.

Blindfold Chess Training — Level 2: Intermediate is designed specifically for club players who have a basic grasp of chess coordinates but need to expand their ability to track multiple interacting pieces simultaneously. This workbook features 500 challenging endgame puzzles with 3 to 7 pieces on the board. Each puzzle is presented as text coordinates only — no board diagram on the puzzle page — forcing you to reconstruct the position in your head and find the winning tactical continuation.

How Does the Training Work?

  1. Read the Piece Coordinates: Each puzzle describes the position in text. For example: “White: King on g1, Rook on d1, Bishop on c4. Black: King on e8, Queen on d7, Pawn on f7. White to move.” No diagram is provided on the puzzle page.
  2. Reconstruct the Position Mentally: Place all 3 to 7 pieces on the board inside your head. Identify which pieces are attacking, which squares are defended, and which lines are open. Notice the relationship between pieces — are any pieces aligned on a rank, file, or diagonal?
  3. Calculate the Winning Combination: Find the 1 to 3 move tactical solution entirely in your mind. The answer might be a fork, a discovered attack, a back-rank mate, or a winning endgame technique. Write your answer in standard algebraic notation.
  4. Verify with the Full Board Diagram: Turn to the solutions section at the back of the book. Every puzzle includes a complete board diagram showing the correct answer, allowing you to instantly compare your mental image against reality.

What You Will Find Inside Level 2:

  • 500 Intermediate Tactical Puzzles: Curated positions focusing on the tactical themes that matter most at the club level — forks, pins, skewers, discovered attacks, back-rank threats, and basic endgame conversions.
  • 3 to 7 Pieces Per Position: The increased piece count introduces multi-piece interactions. You must now track how pieces defend each other, create batteries along files, and set up tactical geometries — all in your head.
  • Solutions Ranging 1 to 3 Moves Deep: Unlike Level 1’s simple one-move answers, Level 2 regularly requires you to calculate a two-move or three-move forced sequence, building genuine calculation depth.
  • Real Tactical Motifs You Will Encounter: Double attacks (knight forks, queen forks), absolute and relative pins along ranks, files, and diagonals, skewers against king and queen, discovered checks, back-rank mates, and elementary king-and-pawn endgame wins.
  • No Board Diagrams on Puzzle Pages: The coordinate-only format continues to strengthen your mental board map, but with significantly more complex positions to hold in your working memory.
  • Full Diagram Solutions for Every Puzzle: Large, clear board diagrams in the answers section let you verify both the final answer and the accuracy of your mental reconstruction.
  • Write-In Answer Spaces: Dedicated space for writing your answers in algebraic notation, reinforcing the coordinate system with every puzzle you solve.
  • Professional Print Quality: Clean, distraction-free layout with generous margins designed for focused study sessions at the desk, in a café, or during travel.

Skills You Will Build:

  • Multi-Piece Tracking: Hold the positions of up to 7 pieces simultaneously in your working memory — a significant leap from Level 1’s 2–5 piece exercises.
  • Tactical Pattern Recognition (Without a Board): Learn to “feel” when a fork, pin, or skewer exists, even when you cannot see the board. This is the skill that separates 1400-rated players from 1800-rated players.
  • Line and Diagonal Awareness: Develop an instinctive sense of which ranks, files, and diagonals connect specific squares — essential for spotting long-range bishop and rook tactics.
  • Calculation Depth (2–3 Moves): Train yourself to hold a sequence of moves in your head and verify that the final position is winning, not just the first move.
  • Blunder Reduction: By building a more reliable mental board, you will naturally stop overlooking simple tactical threats during your actual games.

Who Is This Book For?

  • Club Players (1200–1600 ELO): You understand chess fundamentals but keep losing games to tactical oversights. This book directly targets the visualization weakness behind those losses.
  • Players Who Completed Level 1: If you have finished the 500 beginner puzzles in Level 1 and want the next challenge, Level 2 is the natural progression.
  • Online Players Who Struggle with Time Controls: If blitz and rapid time pressure causes you to blunder, stronger visualization will let you calculate faster and more accurately under the clock.
  • Chess Coaches and Trainers: Use these 500 puzzles as structured homework for intermediate students, as classroom exercises, or as assessment tests to measure visualization improvement.
  • Self-Study Players Without a Coach: This book is a complete, self-contained training programme. You do not need a coach, a chess club, or an internet connection — just this book, a pen, and your mind.

What Makes Level 2 Different from Level 1?

Level 1 gave you simple 2–5 piece positions to build your first mental board map. Level 2 takes that foundation and introduces piece interaction. With 3 to 7 pieces, you must now track how a rook and a bishop coordinate along different lines, how a knight can fork two pieces simultaneously, and how a pawn chain can block an entire diagonal. The solutions are also deeper — you will regularly need to calculate two or three moves ahead, holding the changing board state in your mind at each step. This is where your blindfold training starts to translate directly into stronger over-the-board performance.

This is Book 2 of the progressive 5-book Blindfold Chess Training series. Continue your journey with Level 3 (5–10 pieces), Level 4 (10–16 pieces), and Level 5 (12–24 pieces).

Your opponents calculate on the surface — you will calculate with depth, precision, and confidence. Scroll up, click “Buy Now,” and add 500 intermediate blindfold puzzles to your training arsenal today!
