Istanbul to Host FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2026
Istanbul, Türkiye — The FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2026 will take place from December 25 to 30 in Istanbul, Türkiye, bringing together hundreds of players from across the globe for the year-ending showpiece event of the chess calendar.
Freedom Holding Corp., which has served as FIDE’s strategic partner since 2023, has been named the title sponsor of the championships. The sponsorship forms part of a broader cooperation agreement covering the entirety of 2026, under which Freedom will support major FIDE events including the Candidates tournaments and the World Championship match, alongside grassroots initiatives aimed at expanding the game globally.
These initiatives include the establishment of chess training centres, school programmes and talent identification projects designed to grow participation at every level.
Istanbul’s Chess Credentials
FIDE president Timur Turlov welcomed the decision to award the championships to Istanbul, highlighting Türkiye’s experience in hosting major chess events and its contribution to the sport’s development. The city previously hosted the 40th Chess Olympiad in 2012 and successfully staged the World Youth Blitz and Rapid Chess Championships in 2025.

Defending Champions
The 2026 edition will see reigning champions looking to retain their crowns in what is traditionally one of the most exciting periods in the chess year. World number one rated player Magnus Carlsen claimed both the rapid and blitz titles last year, cementing his status as the dominant force in fast chess.
In the women’s events, Aleksandra Goryachkina holds the rapid championship title while Bibisara Assaubayeva is the defending blitz champion. The four world titles — Open and Women’s Rapid and Blitz — will be up for grabs as competitors race against the clock across six days of play.
A Year-End Tradition
The championships, held during the final week of the year, have become a marquee event on the FIDE calendar, drawing top talent from every continent. Players test their skills across multiple time controls, with both rapid and blitz formats offering distinct challenges that reward different types of preparation and temperament.
With Freedom Holding Corp.’s expanded partnership and Istanbul’s proven track record in event organisation, the 2026 edition is poised to be one of the most high-profile iterations of the championships in recent memory.
