FIDE Unveils New Organizational Structure Under President Timur Turlov

FIDE Proposes Institutional Overhaul

The International Chess Federation, led by President Timur Turlov, has unveiled a new organizational structure designed to strengthen governance and expand the sport’s global reach. The announcement marks one of the first major steps under Turlov’s leadership following his campaign pledge to elevate FIDE to a new level.

Key Structural Changes

The proposed framework establishes a clearer division of responsibilities between FIDE’s governing bodies and its administrative units. The General Assembly retains its position as the supreme governing body, while the FIDE Council is set to play a more active role in shaping and overseeing strategic priorities. A dedicated Governance Secretariat will provide support to both governing bodies and FIDE commissions.

At the center of the reorganization is the President’s Office, which will focus on strategic priorities and major international projects. The office will include Special Representatives of the President responsible for specific areas of activity. Adil Kozhikhov, who has long served as an adviser to Turlov, has been appointed Head of the President’s Office.

New Advisory Board and Secretary General

Another notable addition is the Advisory Board, composed of professionals with international experience across diverse fields. The board will serve in a consultative capacity within FIDE’s existing governance framework, helping to shape long-term strategy and evaluate new initiatives. Grandmaster Darmen Sadvakasov of Kazakhstan, a well-known figure in the chess world, has been named Chair of the Advisory Board.

Day-to-day operations will fall under the Secretary General, with Alina Dvoretskaya appointed to the role. She previously served as Director General of the International School Chess Federation (ISCF).

Broader Strategic Goals

Turlov emphasized that FIDE’s role is expanding beyond organizing international competitions. The federation intends to increase support for national federations, expand chess education programs, and attract new international partners. Modern technology was cited as a significant opportunity to make these efforts more effective.

  • The General Assembly remains the supreme governing body
  • FIDE Council to take a more active role in strategic priorities
  • Advisory Board created with international professionals
  • President’s Office reorganized with Special Representatives
  • Clearer departmental responsibilities under the Secretary General

A New Chapter for FIDE

Throughout its more than 100-year history, FIDE has adapted to the challenges of each era. Turlov argued that rapidly changing circumstances—driven by technological advances, evolving governance expectations, and a growing chess audience—demand further development. He described the new structure as a step toward building a strong international institution capable of implementing a coherent, long-term strategy for chess worldwide.
