India and Mexico Emerge Victorious in Historic Online Tournament

The 6th Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners concluded on October 15 in an online format, with India claiming double gold in the women’s and youth sections and Mexico securing the men’s title. Organized jointly by FIDE and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, the tournament brought together correctional facilities from around the globe to compete on a virtual chessboard.

Finals Deliver Thrills Across All Sections

The men’s final saw Mexico face off against Armenia in a tightly contested battle. The first set ended in a 2-2 draw, with Mexico winning on boards two and three and Armenia responding on boards one and four. In the second set, Mexico dominated by taking victories on boards one, two, and three, ultimately securing the championship.

In the women’s section, India delivered a commanding performance against Mexico, winning both sets 4-0. Representing the Government Children Home in Bhopal, the Indian team showcased superior coordination and strategy throughout the match.

The youth final was equally intense, with India edging out Serbia 2.5-1.5 in the opening set. Serbia mounted a strong comeback in the second set with wins on boards one and three, but Indian players responded on boards two and four to level the set at 2-2, ensuring their overall victory.
