The Ganges Grandmasters claimed the maiden Tech Mahindra Global Chess League title in Bengaluru, overcoming Alpine APL Pipers in a tightly contested final. FYERS American Gambits rounded out the podium by defeating CheQ Mumba Masters in the third-place match.
Final Match Summary
The championship decider was played across two matches. The opening encounter ended in a 3-3 draw, with Volodar Murzin scoring a late victory against Leon Mendonca to level the tie for the Pipers. Earlier in that match, Levon Aronian had given the Grandmasters the lead by defeating Anish Giri.
The second match saw the Grandmasters pull ahead 4-2. Ian Nepomniachtchi delivered a pivotal win against Magnus Carlsen, capitalising on two significant errors from the World Number One. Carlsen’s unwise queen capture of a pawn on the 28th move allowed Nepomniachtchi to regain equality, and a subsequent weakening of the king position led to resignation after 39 moves. Stavroula Tsolakidou’s victory over Koneru Humpy proved decisive in confirming the match result, while the remaining four games were drawn.
